Project Giza was an top-secret operation conducted sometime in the 1940s, under orders from President Roosevelt, on the Stargate. At that time, without any type of dialing computer, they were unable to dial many locations, and only succeeded at manually dialing a single location. Only one person was sent through, Doctor Earnest Littlefield, who was stranded for at least 50 years, alone, on an alien world before he was recovered.
After their success at dialing that world, and the subsequent loss of Doctor Littlefield, all operations on the gate were ceased, despite petitions from Catherine Langford to have the project continued. Petitions that eventually, in 1996, succeeded in getting the Project reactivated, leading to the Stargate Program.
