The NASAV Challenger was a civilian operated SS-303B Atlas Class Scientific Survey Ship operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America. It is named for the Challenger Space Shuttle that was destroyed January 28, 1986.
It was assigned to conduct a colonization study of Mars in the hopes of a off world base within 10 years. It was also conducting testing on the potential of terraforming procedures in hopes of terraforming the planet. It was destroyed when a fleet attacked Earth.
The NASAV Challenger is the third vessel, and the second space-faring vessel, to carry the name Challenger. The first vessel, the only water-borne of the three, was acquired and commissioned on October 4th, 1918, for use in the months following World War I. It was decommissioned the following year, in 1919, and sold. In was sunk in World War II on May 17th, 1942.
The next Challenger was the Space Shuttle Challenger, which was destroyed on January 28th, 1986.
