John Patterson (or JD to his friends) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on June 18th, 1985, and the oldest of three children. While his brother Anthony was a quiet bookworm type, and his sister Lindsey was a social butterfly, JD was extremely independent and tended to do his own thing, regardless of what his parents wanted. Eventually, his family moved to Idaho, and JD spent more of his time in his teen years out in the woods with his buddies, with no concern to his schooling or direction in his life.

Fed up with his "I don't give a damn" attitude, JD's father forced him to enlist with the US Army, in the hopes of introducing some structure into the young man's life. Of course, at first, it didn't take hold, and JD started off boot camp only looking out for himself. Naturally, after his platoon knocked some sense into him, he started becoming a team player. His natural skill with foraging off of the terrain and outdoorsmanship earned him a slot at Mountain Warfare School after Infantry School, and he was then assigned to the 10th Mountain Division.

After his second tour of duty in Iraq, JD was successful in getting into Ranger School in 2008, and earned his Ranger Tabs, and was reassigned to the Rangers. Shortly before deploying to Afghanistan, he attended Airborne and Air Assault School to get his certifications in sync with the majority of the Rangers, and then did two tours of duty with the Rangers in Afghanistan. By this time, JD was eligible to become a Warrant Officer, and had decided he wanted to pursue becoming a helicopter pilot. So in 2010, he attended Warrant Officer School, and then straight into Army Aviation School. After two years, JD was assigned to 10th Mountain's Combat Aviation Brigade, where he was fully rated to fly UH-60 Blackhawks and AH-64 Apaches.

JD's service record finally come to the attention of the Stargate Program in 2014, and he was approached with an offer that he opted not to turn down, and brought his plethora of skills to the Atlantis Expedition.

JD is a straightforward man, he doesn't like complications or for people to beat around the bush. To him, blunt honesty is far more desirable than sugar coating things. To his peers, he can be strict when it's required, but otherwise, is fairly laid back and tends to take an approach that could be best described as "it's not worth stressing about stuff, just get it done", in his own words.
