The Indian Armed Forces (भारतीय सशस्त्र सेनाएं, Bhāratīya Saśastra Sēnāēṃ) are the Armed Forces of the military forces of the Republic of India encompassing the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and several inter-service institutions.

India has the second-largest standing military in the world as of after the People's Republic of China. Auxiliary services include the Indian Coast Guard, the Central Paramilitary Forces (CPF) and the Strategic Forces Command. It has been undergoing rapid expansion and modernization since the late 1990s. The Armed Forces of India possess nuclear weapons and operate short and intermediate-range ballistic missiles as well as nuclear-capable aircraft, and naval vessels.

The Indian Military in it's current states evolved from the British Indian Army, raised to guard the factories of the British East Indian Company. It grew into Presidency armies of Bengal, Madras and Bombay. Under the British Raj, the military, like all British Colonial militaries was commanded by British officer. As such the Officer ranks of all services are based directly on the British system, to the point rank names are English only. Only the Army has non-English rank names, and even they reflect the British Armed Forces style.
